Coccyx Injuries

Pain and discomfort to your tailbone area may be caused by an injury to your coccyx bone.  This is the bone at the bottom of your spine.  The dislocation or fracture of this bone can cause injury resulting in the condition called coccydynia.

Common scenarios that result in coccydynia are:
  • Falling on to the coccyx bone.
  • Trama to the coccyx bone from an impact during physical activity and sports such as skating.
  • Injury to the tailbone during child birth.
  • Repetitive strain from such activities such as bicycling, horseback riding, or rowing.
Symptoms of an injured coccyx:
  • Pain in your tailbone area.
  • Bruising in the tailbone area.
  • Sitting for a long period of time is uncomfortable and painful.
  • Going to the bathroom becomes painful
If you feel you have injured your coccyx, you should take action to allow it to heal and control the pain by removing any type of pressure from the area.  A coccyx cushion will assist the healing process by removing pressure off your coccyx bone while sitting.

A coccygectomy, the surgical removal of the tailbone is rare.  Most people recover by using pain medication and keeping the pressure off with a good padded seat.  However, when surgery is required, it is an effective treatment and low risk.
